Last Saturday we had the pleasure of attending the American School of Bombay’s Incredible India annual celebration. I continue to be in awe of the level of quality at which ASB does everything. You would have thought we were at a paid festival, not some school event on the soccer court!
We began by entering through this funky entrance. Nia immediately bid us farewell and ran off to see her friends. We didn’t see her the rest of the night except for when she was onstage performing! And so it begins, I guess… who wants to hang with their parents, right?
As I mentioned earlier, this event takes place across several soccer fields. A hard flooring is laid down on top of the grass and then red mesh was secured to that. The entry area was full of little activities that the kids could engage in such as making a bracelet or pottery, playing games or doing a craft.
People really dressed up for this event and I honestly felt a little under-dressed. Next year I will definitely wear a saree. It was nice to get a second wear out of my Kurta though!
Behind me is the Unity Tree. People write what India means to them on a card and clip it on to the ribbons. Was a neat concept.
On the far side of the event was a massive stage where the performances were held. Lots of different student groups performed throughout the night.
There were also performances by parent groups, as well as faculty and staff. The food was delicious (though spicy!) and plentiful so we loaded up our plates and watched the show for an hour.
As many of you know, Nia has been taking a Bollywood Dance class as an after-school activity. She has a love/hate relationship with it. While she loves dancing, she apparently HATES that the teacher is always telling her what to do and that she has to repeat the same thing over and over again. Those are definitely Mr Nick’s genes there, folks…both have strong wills and hate being told what to do! I was curious to see how she’d do, given that her attention span is nonexistant and she didn’t seem to like the class.
Without further ado, here is Nia Novak in her Bollywood Boogie. She’s in the back right corner in the pink dress.
Happy Thanksgiving all – we’re embracing our new India life and celebrating with a vegetarian thanksgiving! Someone gorge on turkey for me, ok?
