It started out as one of those normal Thursday mornings. Â I woke up, got dressed and headed out for my short walk to Caribou Coffee to get my morning mocha. Â There was however one fun small change-up in my morning routine that I was looking forward to – it happened to be National Coffee Day and Caribou was doing a buy one get one free offer to celebrate. Â I had my coupon in hand and decided that since I didn’t need 2 drinks, I’d just treat some random stranger to a free cup of coffee.
I was feeling kind of nervous about this for some reason and hurriedly rushed up to the first person I saw and asked if I could buy him a drink. Â He was a bit taken aback and declined saying that he needed 2 drinks anyways. Â I took this as a clue to slow down and went over to a corner of the shop to regroup. Â I decided to try a new approach, specifically, that I’d let my intuition tell me who was meant to have that cup of coffee today. Â I sat there for roughly 5 minutes observing the crowd before I saw THE PERSON enter. Â She was a African-American woman about my age and something about her presence/energy told me she was the one.
I committed and boldly strided up to her asking if she would allow me to buy her drink. Â She accepted with delight and then tried the polite responses of offering to split the cost or pay for mine. Â (Side note: Funny how hard it is for us to receive without strings attached, isn’t it?) Â I stayed firm, insisting that I wanted to get her drink. Â I went about placing our order with my barista friend and then she and I walked to the pick-up counter awaiting our drinks.
We start making small talk about what we do for work and I mentioned that I was a life coach. Â This peaked her interest and not five minutes later she’s pouring out her story to me with tears welling up in her eyes. Â It was such a beautiful moment, because it was so obvious that we were supposed to come together (she even told me later that she wasn’t going to stop for coffee but made a last minute decision to do so). Â It’s as if we were being pulled together by some force beyond our control.
We talked for a good 15 minutes and parted by sharing contact info and agreeing to do a sample coaching session in the next week or so. Â It was such a surreal experience and I could tell she left feeling calmer than when she arrived. Â A few years ago I would have been totally weirded out by this kind of coincidence, but it’s happened too many times now for me to ignore the connection.
No lie people, when you give without attachment, you will constantly be surprised by what the Universe sends back at you…
Don’t believe me? Â Try it for yourself and let me know what you find. Â But remember, the key is that you can’t be expecting to get anything in return. Â And with that I bid adieu and wish you a magical, marvelous day full of unexpected surprises!
This is a beautiful story and proof again to me that there are absolutely NO random moments in this life of ours. Someday when we meet I will share some of my beautiful moments like this with you. Thanks for sharing. Xoxox
Oh yes, that’s definitely an in-person conversation! I am confident we’ll get to cross paths at some point! :) Big hugs to you Chris…
AWESOME, Sarah!!! Go you!
A month back I was behind an older African-American gentleman in the grocery store check-out line. I overheard him telling the cashier that he was buying everything to have his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren over for BBQ.
He was so proud and so excited and his eyes shone. Then came the bad news – the total was more than the cash he had. He started to pick out things and tell the cashier to take them off his bill…one thing…then two, then three.
This is where I came in and gently and quietly told him to pay her his cash and I would take care of the rest. His eyes welled up with tears and he couldn’t speak. I told him to go take care of his family. The circle of giving would go on and he’s an important part of it. With a whispered thank you, a quiet smile, and purpose in his step, he went on his way. The cashier and the person behind me told me they had never seen anything like that before. I told them it was our responsibility to take care of one another and challenged them to do the same.
…and on my way I went…
Awwww, this warmed my heart immensely Bethany! What a BEAUTIFUL act of kindness – I have no doubt it was passed on. Thank you, thank you for sharing that. XOXO
