Nia’s School is Cool (and Mommy’s a Wee Bit Jealous)

T minus 3 weeks and things are moving right along. I wrapped up work last Thursday and am now in full-on selling mode. We’re moving through the stuff at a nice pace though, which should leave me plenty of time to focus on “goodbye parties” next week. I intend to go out with a bang. :)

So after the most ridiculously long application process ever… I am pleased to say that Nia has been accepted into the American School of Bombay. I am so in awe of this school. I’m trying not to be jealous even though I’d really just like to take her place (because I LOVE SCHOOL)!

I’m a visual person, so I thought I’d throw in a few videos in here to for my fellow visual peeps. Here is ASB’s admissions video:

There’s a lot I love about this school. It follows the IB (International Baccalaureate) curriculum, has open classrooms and most importantly, beautifully articulated core values like:

We Believe That…

  • Each person has equal intrinsic value
  • People are responsible for the choices they make
  • All people have potential for growth
  • Internal motivation is the most powerful driver of learning and success
  • A balanced lifestyle is the essence of well-being
  • Mutual trust and respect are essential for healthy, enduring relationships
  • Embracing our interdependence is vital for the community to flourish
  • Practice, perseverance, and reflection are integral to a culture of excellence
  • We are the trustees of our environment

The extra-curricular options are also insane. Here are Nia’s 25 options for a 1st grader:

Arts & Crafts, Creative Movement Dance, Coders Club, Cricket Kids, Exploring the Marvels of the Earth, Junior Chefs, Kid Fit, Let’s Get Cooking, Taekwondo, Weebot Robotics, Ballet, Bollywood Boogie, Chess, Choir, Soccer, Forensics, Gymnastics, Tennis, Weird Science, Yoga, Mandarin, Spanish, German, Tabla, Wall Climbing

And then there’s the Intercessions Program, which is described as “learning experiences that ensure children remain engaged and continue to learn and grow when ‘regular’ school is not in session.” Translation: Your kid never has to have a day off! In fact, your child can go to 55 additional full days of school for free (intercessions are included in tuition). Here’s the schedule from 2017:

Fall Break: September 18th – 22nd, 2017*

Thanksgiving Weekend: November 24th – 25th, 2017*

Christmas Break: December 18th – 22nd, 2017*

Spring Break: March 20th – 23rd, 2018*

Easter Break: April 28th – May 1st, 2018

Summer Break: Classes offered 6 Weeks during June and July

Now, while this does seem intense, note that participation is voluntary and the material covered is more similar to what would be done in extra-curriculars. We’ll see if Nia wants to go to “bonus school”.  :)

The other thing that has me really excited (and of which I’ll surely be on the committee for) is the special events that happen each year like Incredible India Day, The Festival of Nations and the Arts Festival. Check out these beautifully made short videos recapping each one.

Incredible India

Festival of Nations

Arts Festival

And parents get to do lots more than the PTA. There are weekly yoga classes, book clubs and speakers brought in just for parents! I’m pretty sure I’m gonna love it…

Now can’t you see why I’m a little jealous?? Nia has no idea how lucky she is!
