Last night we had the amazing good fortune of seeing MN-based singer/songwriter Peter Mayer perform in concert. My first introduction to Peter was back around 2000 when I saw him in a coffeehouse performance at St. Ben’s. I became an insta-fan and have been following his work ever since.
Early in our dating years, I took Nick to see one of Peter’s concerts in Minneapolis. Nick was quite taken by him too and over the years Peter’s music could frequently be heard in our home on lazy Sunday mornings and board game nights. During our wedding planning, we immediately thought of Peter Mayer’s “Holy Now” song for our first dance and although our Calypso band butchered it a bit, the sentiment behind the song still came through loud and clear.
Peter’s MN concerts are always jam-packed (usually several hundred people). I’ve never been able to get anywhere near him. So imagine our surprise when we walked in to the venue last night and found a mere 40 people there. It was such a great concert experience from the 2nd row – so intimate! At intermission we jumped at the chance to get our picture taken with him.
We took a video of our wedding song for you to enjoy. I’ve also copied the lyrics below because they truly are breathtaking. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Shout out to Auntie Judy and Nena for taking care of the threenager. Â :)
When I was a boy, each week
On Sunday, we would go to church
And pay attention to the priest
He would read the holy word
And consecrate the holy bread
And everyone would kneel and bow
Today the only difference is
Everything is holy now
Everything, everything
Everything is holy now
When I was in Sunday school
We would learn about the time
Moses split the sea in two
Jesus made the water wine
And I remember feeling sad
That miracles don’t happen still
But now I can’t keep track
‘Cause everything’s a miracle
Everything, Everything
Everything’s a miracle
Wine from water is not so small
But an even better magic trick
Is that anything is here at all
So the challenging thing becomes
Not to look for miracles
But finding where there isn’t one
When holy water was rare at best
It barely wet my fingertips
But now I have to hold my breath
Like I’m swimming in a sea of it
It used to be a world half there
Heaven’s second rate hand-me-down
But I walk it with a reverent air
‘Cause everything is holy now
Everything, everything
Everything is holy now
Read a questioning child’s face
And say it’s not a testament
That’d be very hard to say
See another new morning come
And say it’s not a sacrament
I tell you that it can’t be done
This morning, outside I stood
And saw a little red-winged bird
Shining like a burning bush
Singing like a scripture verse
It made me want to bow my head
I remember when church let out
How things have changed since then
Everything is holy now
It used to be a world half-there
Heaven’s second rate hand-me-down
But I walk it with a reverent air
‘Cause everything is holy now
Thank you for introducing me to Peter Mayor and this song – love it! Will have to look into more of his work. On the side – the term ‘threenager’ had me cracking up!!
Awesome, glad you like both the song and our little nickname. :)
