One of our traditions is to collect a piece of art from each country we are posted to. We always purchase it at the beginning of our stay, prior to the Embassy coming over to hang up all our wall art (I know, what can I say, we’re spoiled)!
Nick and I continue to gravitate toward abstract expressions of iconic images from our host country. In Manila we scored a beautiful abstract painting of Jeepneys in the street. In Peru, I found the perfect depiction of indigenous Peruana women toting their bundles (babies, flowers, etc). This is still a very common sight when you get out of Lima and to me it really sums up the rich cultural history that is still alive here.
Since the distance in the first photo fails to capture the skills of this artist (Rivera Rondon), I thought I’d provide some close-ups so you could appreciate the texture along with me.
So while Nick managed to nail me down to a budget, what he failed to bring up was just how large it could be. I decided Peru needed to be remembered with GUSTO, so we went with the G-R-A-N-D-E size.

What an amazing piece of art. I love the colors, shapes, great choice. We also used to choose one or two really nice pieces of local art from a place we were posted. Much better than lots of little “handicraps” as Ambassador Ed Peck used to say!!

Haha Chris! I lived in Honduras back in my grad school days and the big thing to buy was the unique Lenca pottery. I remember my last few weeks I was in country I begged my Honduran boyfriend to go with me to a faraway village where they apparently had a great Lenca collection and he was baffled as to why I would want that junk. To the locals it was just “crap” but for me it was unique and cool!
I noticed that painting right away when you posted your photos on FB…I just love it. We try to buy some art on every trip to a new country, since we don’t have much art. I can’t WAIT to get to Peru someday.
We’re starting to collect art as well. It’s such a great keepsake and really livens up the Drexel furniture! :)
